Flatware Placement at the Dinner Table

So, you've invited some guests to dinner and want to set the table for a nice evening meal. Usually, the most stressful part is where to place the flatware. You may be puzzled and looking at the table as you read. Making your dinner table look beautiful and following etiquette rules is not intended to make it more difficult. Here is a simple way to remember which utensil goes to the right of the plate and which ones go to the left. Look at your plate. You know that something goes to the left. L-E-F-T has four letters. The utensil that has four letters goes on the LEFT side. F-O-R-K has four letters, so it goes on the left side.

R-I-G-H-T has five letters. The K-N-I-F-E and S-P-O-O-N both have five letters, so they go on the right. However, we have two utensils for the right. The knife is always placed closest to the plate with the thought that it will most likely be needed after the spoon. Also, always remember to place the knife's sharp edge facing the plate. Dessert utensils can be placed at the top of the plate or served with the dessert. I hope this was helpful. Happy dining! ❤️
